Personalization

Negative Thought:

Blaming yourself for events outside your control.

Example:

  • Problem: A colleague didn’t invite you to an after-work gathering.

  • Negative Thinking: "They didn’t invite me because they don’t like me. I must have done something wrong."

  • Mind Hack: Shift Responsibility—Ask yourself, "Could there be other reasons? Maybe they thought I was busy or assumed I wouldn’t be interested."

Mind Hacks:

  • Shift Responsibility

: Ask, "Is this really my fault, or are there other factors at play?" Identify external causes.

  • Practice Self-Kindness:

Write down why you are not to blame, and give yourself grace.

  • Objective Observer:

  • Imagine you are an outsider looking in. Would you still hold yourself responsible from that viewpoint?
